September 2025. Field trip study of the pedagogical potential of selected public urban spaces in Berlin

Natalija Bogdanović, a researcher engaged in the project RELATE Architecture and Urban Planning – An Outside Curriculum, conducted a field study of the pedagogical potential of selected public urban spaces in Berlin (Germany) from 22 to 26 September. The field study was based on a previous multi-month research within the WP2 package, which involved establishing a framework for analyzing, documenting, and categorizing the pedagogical potential of architecture, spatial interventions, installations, and public spaces outside curricula sites.

The research established an overview of the state in the international context using the developed analytical framework, and an exhaustive database of international practice on pedagogical spaces and locations outside the curriculum was formed (WP2 Table) – which includes 50 case studies. Based on the mapping of the locations from the WP2 Table, it was concluded that Berlin is one of the cities where there are several locations suitable for in situ research. The research trip was conducted in order to compare previous research and the situation on the ground, and then to draw more precise conclusions about the pedagogical outcomes of the considered case studies with the aim of theoretical elaboration through the writing of a scientific research paper co-authored by Jelena Brendović (authorship, Jelena Brendović).

Activities during the trip included the exploration of public urban spaces and buildings in Berlin in order to provide an in-depth critical analysis of the selected case studies. Selected case studies are: Berlin’s urban gardening project – the Prinzessinengärten, Floating University, Tempelhofer Field, Wald.Berlin.Klima. – Exhibition in the Forest, Jewish Museum. The site visit included the creation of extensive photo documentation, notes with analyses of spatial characteristics, recording the atmosphere and spatial impressions based on being in the space and its use, as well as conversations with the users of the space.
