In RELATE’s work package VI, we are diving into creating transformable 3D structures designed to add life to urban spaces and spark learning about the space itself. One of these structures is a participatory art installation, where a group of students will help to bring this conceptual design to life through a hands-on workshop. The structure follows some loose guidelines:
– Transformability: This isn’t a fixed, static piece—it’s meant to shift and reshape, adapting to the imagination of those interacting with it.
– Design: Built with interconnected triangles in a triangular grid, the structure transforms in 3D space, taking on freeform, open or closed shapes.
– Materials: We are working with what’s available, keeping it simple and resource-efficient.
The twist here? AI image generators come into play, taking on multiple roles as a participant, guide, learner and creator —just like the students. It’s part collaboration, part friendly “duel,” where students and AI both get to contribute ideas. Through this mix, students explore how to use AI’s creative ideas, including its quirky “hallucinations” and surreal touches, while learning when to embrace or challenge its limits to turn these imaginative concepts into real-life forms.

The workshop is held on October 25, 2024 at the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade, led by Marija Obradović and Slobodan Mišić. It brought together first-year students from the Design Study Program (basic academic studies) of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design module and Industrial Design module, Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade.
